ENERGY MANAGEMENT: ISO 50001 REVISION, CHANGES & TIMELINE

Since 2016, the ISO technical committee has been reviewing ISO 50001 to ensure that the standard continues to meet the changing needs of organizations. In order to understand the changes between ISO 50001:2011 to ISO 50001:2019, DQS will inform you of the latest developments on a regular basis.

What is ISO 50001?

The overall objective of ISO 50001 is to support organizations in their efforts to structure and implement a comprehensive energy management system, as well as to continually improve their energy performance. ISO 50001 assists organizations in their pursuit of energy-related objectives in a systematic, comprehensive, goal oriented, and sustainable manner. Adopting the standard enables organizations to meet legal requirements, to identify and analyze the flows of energy, to save costs and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What changes can we expect between the two versions?

  • The standard will implement the High Level Structure (HLS) already found in ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, and will share the same terminology. This will make it easier to integrate energy management into the overall management system.
  • Key concepts relating to energy performance are more clearly defined; content will be more linguistically precise (Clause 3).
  • Increased focus on top management and leadership engagement during the implementation process (Clause 5).
  • Risk-based thinking to play a bigger role in improving energy performance (Clause 6).
  • The suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the management system will need to be revised, alongside energy performance. A bigger focus on continuous improvement remaining active in the development and implementation of the management system is also to be expected (Clause 10).

What happens next?

After taking all public comments into consideration, the last draft is expected in June 2018, with the final standard set to be released in January 2019.

ANTI-BRIBERY: VIVO ENERGY OBTAINS OUR FIRST ISO 37001 CERTIFICATE

After a successful audit on March 14, DQS CFS GmbH is delighted to issue its first ever ISO 37001 certificate to VIVO Energy in The Netherlands. We would like to congratulate the entire VIVO Energy team on their successful audit of their anti-bribery management system.

What is ISO 37001:2016?

ISO 37001:2016 is an Anti-bribery Management System (ABMS). It guides organisations to establish, implement, maintain, review and improve an ABMS to reduce and manage the risk of bribery. This is a generic standard that can be implemented in all organisations, regardless of the industry or size. It can also be easily integrated into existing management systems.

Why is an ABMS so important?

An ABMS provides guidance to prevent bribery and take appropriate action should instances of attempted bribery occur.  An implemented ABMS according to ISO 37001 can protect companies’ reputation and ensure investor and customer confidence.

VIVO Energy; their experience

The audit at Vivo Energy was successfully conducted in March 2018. Ms. Mari van Wyk, responsible for the implementation of ISO 37001, describes the

experience as follows: “DQS was our chosen certification partner and from the start, it was clear why they are the best. The audit team were a senior, experienced team, which shows DQS’s commitment to their clients. The team was extremely helpful and professional, which made our “daunting” audit a pleasant experience. They guided us every step of the way and were also willing to ask the hard and difficult questions. DQS assisted us with the readiness assessment, which helped us to be adequately prepared for the actual certification. In short, we were Happy as Larry with their service. “

Behzad Sadegh, the ISO 37001 lead auditor and product manager at DQS, was very pleased with the result of the certification audit. „The anti-bribery awareness has risen significantly within the past few years. The ability to be transparent has become increasingly important for companies such as VIVO Energy. Accordingly, we are seeing a strong upsurge in the demand for ISO 37001 certification. Through value-adding assessments, we support our clients in their mission to minimise the risk of bribery from internal and external influences.
