SUCCESSFUL ASSURANCE REVIEW: DQS APPROVES SYMRISE SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2018

For the fifth year in a row, Symrise, one of the largest producers of fragrances and flavors in the world, has engaged DQS to provide assurance over its GRI sustainability record. After a thorough evaluation, our assessors have come to the conclusion that the Symrise Sustainability Record is a credible and comprehensive representation of the sustainability performance of Symrise.

Third-party assurance is an increasingly popular way to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of sustainability reports. With positive experiences from last years’ assurance in mind, Symrise again decided to rely upon DQS as its partner for independent review.

The assurance process

The Symrise Sustainability Record was published in accordance with the GRI Standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) published in 2016 as well as the new standards on water and wastewater (303, 2018) and occupational health and safety (403, 2018). The Sustainability Record was prepared in accordance with the GRI standards “Comprehensive” option. This means that Symrise discloses all the relevant information and is fully accountable on all essential topics. The Sustainability Report also contains a separate non-financial report in accordance with Section 289b (3) of the German Commercial Code (HGB).

For the actual assurance, the DQS team relied on the AA1000 Assurance Standard (AA1000AS 2008 with 2018 Addendum), a publicly available standard for third party verification. The assurance audit was conducted in accordance with a Type 2 assurance, which consists of:

  • Evaluating the company’s sustainability framework and processes using the inclusivity, materiality and responsiveness criteria of the AA1000 AccountAbility Principles (AA1000APS 2018), and
  • Evaluating the quality of the reported sustainability performance information.

The assurance encompassed the entire report and focused on all figures, statements and claims related to sustainability during the reporting period January 2018 to December 2018, as well as historical figures where relevant.

Outcome: The assurance statement

On the basis of the methodology described above, our auditor team has concluded that the report provides a credible and fair representation of Symrise’s sustainability profile, and that the statements and figures achieve the required level of reliability and accuracy.

The Assurance Statement, which summarizes the main findings of the assessment, can be downloaded here. The full Symrise sustainability record is available online and can be viewed here.

Symrise is a global supplier of fragrances, flavorings, cosmetic base materials and substances as well as functional ingredients. Its clients include manufacturers of perfumes, cosmetics, food and beverages, the pharmaceutical industry and producers of nutritional supplements and pet food. With sales of about € 3.2 billion in 2018, Symrise is among the global leaders in the market for flavors and fragrances. Headquartered in Holzminden, Germany, the Group is represented in over 40 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Asia, the United States and Latin America.

IFS FOOD STANDARD VERSION 7 – TIMETABLE AND CHANGES

Since the publication of the IFS Food Standard Version 6 in January 2012, many of our clients have been wondering when version 7 will follow. According to the latest information released, Version 7 will be published in the first quarter of 2020.

As far as the timeline is concerned, at the moment of writing the first IFS Stakeholder consultation is ongoing. All national and international IFS Working Groups have been asked for their feedback about the changes in the new version.

In the third quarter of 2019, pilot audits will take place. A number of companies with different product/tech scopes have been selected for test audits and will be audited against the new draft checklist.

The second public consultation will take place in the fourth quarter of 2019. All stakeholders will have thirty days to give feedback on the new standard. You can access the consultation on the IFS website.

Publication is scheduled for the first quarter of 2020. After the release, organisations will have nine month to implement the new/or modified requirements before the new version will come into force.

IFS Food 7 – Changes

At the moment it is too soon to confirm any of the changes, as the discussions are ongoing. However, IFS has already stated its main objectives for the new version:

  • The new version shall ensure that all requirements are appropriate for the current state of the industry.
    • IFS Food 7 shall place more emphasis on product/process related audit methodology to allocate more time in production, adapting the evaluation by restricting documentation review to the essentials only.
    • The focus needs to be on the importance of food safety and quality through simpler and more descriptive phrasing.
Thus, the main objective is that IFS Auditors should spend more time in the production area than before.

SUSTAINABLE FINANCE – DQS CFS APPROVED

FOR

CLIMATE BONDS VERIFICATION

A FairTrade-like certification scheme for bonds – that is how the Climate Bonds Initiative describes itself. The Climate Bonds certificate applies to bonds that are consistent with the 2 degrees Celsius warming limit of the Paris Agreement. As an approved verifier, we will be providing assurance to issuers and investors that bonds contribute to a low-carbon economy.

For the year 2019, credit rating agency Moody’s estimates the volume of newly issued green bonds at up to 200 billion USD. At the moment, this amounts to only a fraction of the total bond market, but the segment is growing rapidly. With sustainable finance becoming increasingly important, the pressure is on investors to take environmental, social and governance criteria (ESG) into account.

The growing relevance of Sustainable Finance is also supported by legislative plans in various countries. Germany, for example, is aiming to take the lead in this area to transform and execute Agenda 2030. At the international level, the EU published its EU-Action Plan: Financing Sustainable Growth in March 2018. Because they mobilize funds for the transition to a low-carbon economy, Green Bonds have a key role to play in these plans. However, to make Sustainable Finance effective, we need reliable standards.

One certification – many advantages

Certification to the Climate Bonds Standard helps issuers attract new investors and demonstrate their commitment to a low-carbon economy. Because the certification involves an independent review by qualified verifiers like DQS, it saves investors from having to do their own environmental due diligence. All bonds are listed on the Climate Bonds website, where issuers can reach a larger international audience. Not least, issuers can improve their reputation and demonstrate their focus on low-carbon projects.

Dr. Sied Sadek, Managing Director at DQS CFS and approved verifier of the Climate Bonds Initiative, is a strong advocate of the initiative: “The Climate Bonds Certification has great value because it enables investors to separate the green from the greenwashing. The transparency involved is good for everyone – issuers, investors and our climate.” The certification is available for any organization seeking to finance or re-finance low-carbon projects, such as project developers, utilities, equipment manufacturers, banks and aggregators. The program is currently available for bonds related to the following assets: Solar EnergyWind EnergyGeothermal EnergyMarine Renewable EnergyWater InfrastructureLow Carbon Transport Low Carbon Building. More sector criteria are in development.

DQS – Your Partner for Certification

DQS is your partner for Climate Bonds certification. We schedule the verification without hassle, rely exclusively on experienced auditors, create added value with intelligent audit reports and guide you through the entire certification process. DQS has been approved to conduct Climate Bonds verification across the globe. Our certificate of approval is available for download here.

IFS FOOD SAFETY CHECKS – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

From this month onwards, companies can register for an IFS Food Safety Check. But what exactly is an IFS Food Safety Check, which purpose does it fulfil and how does it work?

What is an IFS Food Safety Check?

The unannounced IFS Food Safety Check is an optional audit, which aims to review whether a company complies with the IFS requirements regarding HACCP, hygiene and pest control in daily operations. In contrast to regular IFS certification audits, IFS Food Safety Checks are carried out by IFS itself, independently of the certification body.

The basis of the IFS Food Safety Checks are selected requirements of IFS Food Version 6.1 and the IFS Wholesale Version 2, with a focus on HACCP, hygiene and pest control.

What is the point of the IFS Food Safety Check?

A successfully completed IFS Food Safety Check enables companies to demonstrate that they comply with the IFS requirements in daily operations – not only on the day of the certification audit, but every day.

German retailers represented in the IFS committees have accepted an announced IFS Food audit in combination with an unannounced IFS Food Safety Check as equivalent to an unannounced IFS audit. This gives sites the opportunity to return to the announced IFS certification audit, while proving their continuous compliance through an IFS Food Safety Check.

How does it work?

The IFS Food Safety Checks are carried out in a single day and without prior notice. A valid IFS certificate is the prerequisite for performing an IFS Food Safety Check.

Certified sites can apply for the IFS Food Safety Check as soon as all documents of their last IFS certification audit have been uploaded into the IFS database. At the time of registration, the current certificate must have a remaining validity of at least 6 months. This way IFS ensures the unannounced character of the IFS Food Safety Check. Interested companies are asked to register as soon as possible after receiving their certificate. In justified individual cases, IFS Management GmbH reserves the right to make changes to the deadlines in order to enable interested companies to participate.

As of now you can apply via the login area on the IFS website. The IFS Food Safety Checks are carried out independently of the certification body. Planning, execution and evaluation will be directed by IFS Management GmbH. The auditors are contracted directly by IFS.

What happens if a site does not pass the IFS Food Safety Check?

IFS Food Safety Check can be passed or not passed. The certification body will be informed via mail about the result. In case the result is “not passed” the certification body has to take a decision whether to suspend or to maintain the current IFS certificate. The site has the opportunity to provide IFS with an explanatory statement about the failed IFS Food Safety Check.

In case the check is not passed, IFS advises sites to inform their clients about the facts, circumstances and results of the IFS food Safety Check. After the upload of the report, all retailers that have the respective site in their favourite list of the IFS database, will be informed of the result via e-mail. When certification is successful, retailers will be informed in the same way.

The responsible certification body will be requested to decide within seven days whether the current certificate will be suspended or maintained. In case the certification body decides to maintain the current certificate, this information will again be forwarded by email to all retailers. If the responsible certification body decides to suspend the current certificate this information will be forwarded automatically by the IFS database to all users having access to IFS database and having mentioned the respective company in their favourites list of the IFS database.

During the Food Safety Check, IFS will take photos that serve as objective evidence in case of a not-passed evaluation. For reason of preservation of evidence, the photos remain with IFS Management GmbH. They will not be uploaded into the IFS database and are therefore not accessible to third parties.
